It really does look like Bibi’s career will finally be over

From your lips to His ears.

I was talking to someone recently who said something that really clarified this for me, which was that Bibi was a “Giffen good”, that is, "the Israeli electorate feels like it needs more of him when he has hurt them so badly that they can’t afford anything better.“ And historically, that feels correct… but the way that this analogy doesn’t work is important, and I think relevant, for the current situation.

For folks who aren’t familiar with economics, a Giffen good is something that people buy more of when its price rises. Say that you have potatoes every single day for dinner, six days a week, and meat for dinner once a week on Shabbat. If the price of potatoes rises so that you can no longer afford meat, you’ll instead have potatoes for dinner seven days a week, and as a result, you’ll buy more potatoes.

The difference is… you actually need to eat. There was a reason why you didn’t have a choice but to be priced out of eating anything other than potatoes – it’s because in this situation, potatoes are all you can afford as a staple in the first place. When the market shifts and you get screwed, it’s not the potatoes conspiring to rob you of other food sources. The potatoes and you are, bizarrely, in it together in a way that Netanyahu and the Israeli electorate never were.

Netanyahu isn’t a Giffen good; Netanyahu is a payday loan company. He’s never been just passively milking the rally-around-the-flag effect whenever a tragedy occurs. His entire political strategy is built around causing so much harm to befall his own voters that they get scared and are naturally drawn to bad authoritarian policies – the exact same policies, in fact, that he’s used to spread fear in the first place. He engineered this current crisis, by enacting policies which he knew full well would both inflame tensions and undermine military readiness. He’s being doing it since the very beginning – he literally backed Hamas back in the day. And now his claim is, in essence, "unless you support me going in guns blazing into the conflict that I engineered to keep you crawling back to me, I won’t get you out of the the conflict that I engineered to keep you crawling back to me.” Why should any Israeli believe him?

The illusion that Netanyahu maintains is that he’s a staple like potatoes – that’s he’s the thing you need to fall back on even as the price of supporting him rises, because he’s sadly the best and only option that you have. I sincerely hope that “worse than the Yom Kippur War” is enough to finally shatter that illusion for good, because if it isn’t, then I don’t think anything will.

Copying the article and text across to this version too, because good commentary

Netanyahu’s Approval Ratings Have Hit Rock Bottom In Israel, Haaretz

“…In this survey, Likud sank to just 19 seats, a precipitous drop of 32 percent compared to the pre-attack poll. Gantz’s National Unity Party catapulted from 29 to 41 seats… … Among those who voted for Likud, just under half preferred Netanyahu, while one-third supported someone else… …Two-thirds responded that the debacle was worse than that of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. A majority of Jews who voted for parties in the Netanyahu coalition in 2022 agreed.”

When Bibi is gone he needs to go to trial, I don’t much care if it is in Israel or the ICC so long as he is held personally responsible for October 7 and every civilian death that followed regardless of national identity, and the Leadership of the IDF has a fundamental shakeup and investigation/prosecution into prejudiced procedure.

That last part is a high hope, but I think it is possible with a united international effort, especially in tandem with an internationally sanctioned strengthening of the Palestinian Security Forces. I do think it is possible to build new settlements within the internationally recognised borders of Israel and undertake a policy of repatriation of settlers to them from the west bank, leaving the west bank settlements for the occupation of Palestinians… With an intentionally strengthened Palestinian Authority gaining statehood (because we know the Bibi has made it a specific point of his 16 year career in power to undermine the Palestinian Authority)

Please at this time Donate to the Red Crescent and the Red Shield of David… They need all the support possible.

Also ZaKA (זק"א). They are an organization that works to preserve the dignity of the dead by recovering their bodies and ensuring they receive respect and proper treatment according to their religious rites (they have other religious wings aside from Jewish). I don’t know what the Palestinian equivalent of this organization is, but if it exists please share it and support it. There’s a lot of dead and unfortunately there’s probably going to be many more and they all deserve dignity.

The greatest mitzvah is helping a soul along to its burial, because it’s the only mitzvah where you cannot be thanked by the person you’re helping.

A friend of mine has asked me to specifically mention this project which is near completion.

Sadly it will be sorely needed. The exterior walls are not yet complete and are needed to protect the burials from being disturbed by dogs and other such menaces that may dig into graves.

Adding Medical Aid for Palestinian.

If you would like to donate directly to the Gazan Orthodox Christian community for humanitarian supports and repair of the damaged St Porphyrios Orthodox Church you can support this campaign by The Holy Orthodox Order of St George the Great Martyr here. Or at the bottom of the page here

Please support the joint Palestinian and Israeli project Bereaved Families For Peace (I set the language to English, hopefully that is carried over to the link.) this is a time of bereavement for everybody in this awful situation.

Also support Roots, fostering peace and reconciliation between Palestinians a d Israelis

“Standing Together is a grassroots movement mobilizing Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel in pursuit of peace, equality, and social and climate justice. While the minority who benefit from the status quo of occupation and economic inequality seek to keep us divided, we know that we — the majority — have far more in common than that which sets us apart.”

the men and boys are innocent too.

we cry “the innocent women and children” to appeal to the masses, to try and force their sympathy, but the men and boys are innocent too.

I have seen sons crying out for their mothers, their fathers, their siblings. I have seen them break down at the loss of their families. I have seen them cling to their dead and grieve.

I have seen fathers cradle their dead children, seen them kiss their faces and hold their little hands. I have seen them faint with grief when asked to identify the dead. I have seen them carry their sons and daughters. I have seen them fasting to provide what little they can for their families.

I have seen men and boys digging through the rubble with just their bare hands, I have seen them comforting strangers, playing with children, rocking them, hushing them, even if the face of such imminent danger. I have seen them cry, seen them grieve, seen them break down into each other’s arms, seen them be selfless, beyond selfless, becoming something I don’t have a word for.

I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they’re threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.

the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.

Attempts to erase Palestinian identity and connection to The Land are just as insidious as attempts to erase Jewish identity and connection to The Land.

There is active erasure taking place on both “sides.” I think this is because people seem to be so unable to hold two goddamn things at once and they see the existence of one group in connection to The Land, to completely undermine the existence of another group in connection to The Land.

This is super immature and also very fucking annoying because it means we have to watch people jump through hoops to try and explain that Palestinians don’t exist or that all Jews are colonizers who grew out of the ground in Europe.

Not to be extra political lately or anything but if I didn’t specifically have Israeli friends and follow Israelis on social media, I would probably not know that there have been massive weekly protests against the right-wing Netanyahu government for going on seven straight months now, and there’s a massive huge one happening right this second, so maybe you also don’t know it.

Reblogging this now for no reason in particular

I don’t know how my position of “genocide bad, sharing and recovery from generational trauma good” so often gets twisted into “you are advocating for genocide” by goyische anti-zionists who then advocate for genocide in turn. It is genuinely depressing.

sorry but netanyahu has made it soooooo fucking obvious that this is not about securing safety, continued existence, or a future for jewish children. he and likud have made it abundantly clear that this is about power and violence, and i don’t believe for one single second that they have any of us in mind, diaspora or israeli.

bibi is desperate for power and relevance and he’s getting it at the expense of thousands of israelis’ lives and tens of thousands of palestinians’s lives. and at the expense of everyone fucking hating him. wartime approval ratings for leaders usually go up; bush’s went from 51% to 90%. bibi’s has sunk to 30%. he is on borrowed time. i hope that time runs out soon and he and his fellow traitors to the jewish people spend the rest of their lives doing teshuvah for the horrors they’ve caused.

i know i said i was moving all i/p stuff to a different blog but this ask pissed me off bc i have not spent the last few weeks fighting off antisemites for someone to show up in my inbox spouting the same bullshit copy paste line people have been using for years to try to guilt us into supporting a corrupt government we don’t have any say in. fuck off! :)
